A new search feature that searches the marriage of two individuals who share the same information.

The Marriages between 1837 and 1911 list only the Surnames, Forenames and Districts of those individuals getting married. Familyrelatives.org has developed a Marriage Match search facility in order to help its members locate those individuals who share similar information.

Let us assume for example that we are looking for Charlie Chaplin’s parents.

First of all we learn that his father was also called Charles Chaplin. Furthermore we know that his parents were married in 1885 and his mother’s name was Hannah although we do not know her surname.

So we search for Charles Chaplin in the period (1866 to 1911) during which the marriage took place to discover the match.

By pressing the marriage “Match”, we are presented with the options. In this case there are four possibilities with common criteria, obviously Charles Chaplin is one of those.

Immediately we can eliminate William Henry Bottle which leaves us with the remaining two who happen to be Charlotte Collins and Hannah Harriet Hill. As we know that Charlie Chaplin’s mother was called Hannah we have established our match.

The Marriage Match is available for 1866 to 1920 and 1984 to 2004. The cost for using the new Marriage match search facility is 2 units

We are delighted to announce the addition of the Birth, Marriage and Death index records for the period 1837-1865. This extends the coverage of all indexed records from 1837 to 2004, which are all the records currently available. We have made the records 1837 - 1865 available on a Surname and Forename range search.

Familyrelatives.org have transcribed over 150 million records and offer the largest fully searchable database for Births, Marriages and Deaths Indexes for England & Wales available online.

To find out how to search these records click on the following link;

In line with the positive feedback of our members we are please to be able to extend the period for which units can be used. All units last for a minimum of 90 days which is 3 times longer than before. We realise that family historians are away on holidays or otherwise busy, so now you have much more time to go back to your genealogy. Also remember that MyAccount saves all your searches automatically for up to 3 months.

Should you choose to spend £25.00 or more, all units are valid for 180 days - that’s a full six months to give you plenty of time to carry out your research.
We believe in offering our members excellent value for money. We have therefore simplified our pricing. All our greyscale images cost 1 unit to view. That is better quality images for less money. No other website offers you greyscale images at such a great price.

We have simplified not only our pricing but our members get better value and compared to our competitors we fare pretty well.

A feature unique to Familyrelatives.org is “MySearches”. We realise that many of our members do not always have the time to save all their searches so we do it for you. All your searches for the previous 3 months or 90 days can be viewed at any time simply by going to “MySearches” and there you will find all your previous searches. What’s more you can view any previously viewed search free of charge. Even better you can sort your search results by Event, Year, Date searched etc. No other website allows you to do this.

Many of our members have asked us to explain the difference between Greyscale and Black and White.

First the technical part:

The main differences are that Black and White images are scanned in bitonal i.e. either Black or White and therefore they are scanned in 2 bits. Greyscale images however, are scanned at 256 levels of grey from white through the range to black therefore there are 256 shades of grey.

Greyscale is also scanned at 8 bits as compared with 2 bits for Black and White.

The Difference in Practical terms

The important difference between Greyscale and Black and White is one of quality. Greyscale provides much clearer definition particularly on older records and captures more data. The downside is that the image filesizes are larger than Black and White but we have compressed these for you to view.

Therefore if you are viewing a handwritten document it is generally better to view it in greyscale. The example below shows the difference in real terms. On the left is a sample of a Black and White image on the right is a sample of a Greyscale image.

It is clear to see that the right hand image in Greyscale provides much better definition to the image and therefore makes it easier to read.

It gets better. You can view a greyscale image in Black and White but you cannot upgrade an image that is Black and White to Greyscale. To see how you can view a greyscale image in Black and White click here
